Recirculation Pump

Waiting for hot water is not only frustrating, but it is costly and wastes water. If you have never heard of a recirculation pump or want to know more about it, read on.

What Happens

When you turn on your faucet for hot water, water starts flowing from the pipe. Typically, the water that immediately comes out is cold because it has been waiting in the pipe.

Two Options

Full Recirculating Pump

Using a dedicated return pipe, water runs in a loop from the water heater to the fixture that you turned on and back again to the water heater. Left on, the pump will provide hot water instantly. Many homeowners opt to use timers to keep costs down.

Comfort System

This second option is more suitable for existing homes because it makes use of the cold water pipe that is already there. The downside to this solution is that the pipe needs time to deliver cold water right after hot water.

Pipes

Taking an additional step by insulating your hot water pipes also helps keep the water hotter for a longer period of time.
