Should You Replace the Ductwork?

Should you replace the ductwork in your home?

Ductwork is like the veins in your body. It circulate air throughout your home like veins circulate blood throughout your body. In order for your HVAC system to work efficiently, your ductwork must be in excellent condition. Since it’s hidden in your attic, how do you know when it’s time to replace the ductwork?

Odor

Do you notice a musty odor when you turn on your furnace or air conditioner? The culprit is most likely mold. This can cause serious health issues as mold spores are spread throughout your house every time your system is turned on. Call a professional immediately.

Noise

Your HVAC system is designed to function quietly. A tear, a clog, or even a disconnected duct will make noise, indicating that there is a problem. Don’t ignore any noises that you hear because they can cause further damage.

Temperature

Ideally, every room in your house should be the same temperature. If some parts are too hot or too cold, then you may have a leak somewhere in the ductwork. Temperature imbalance and inconsistent airflow require the attention of an HVAC technician.

Performance

A new HVAC system should perform efficiently. However, if you notice that yours is not doing so, have a professional assess the condition of your ductwork. On average, ductwork should last 10 to 15 years. Over time, wear and tear causes deterioration which compromises the performance of your new or existing furnace and air conditioner.
